Well.....Hello Fresh!

Thursday 11 September 2014

I love cooking. Whether that be baking a cake, rustling up a lasagne, or making my own truffle gnocchi to go with a sage and butter roast chicken, I just love the satisfaction you get from taking a few standard ingredients and making it into something beautifully yummy.

I love cooking...when I have time...when I can be bothered...oh and when I'm organised enough to plan all the ingredients I need for each recipe.

After a long and busy day at work, knowing I have an empty fridge at home, having to decide what I want to eat, then go to the shops to buy the ingredients and finally cook it sometimes fills me with dread heck it's just tired me out typing it. I know I should just be a bit more organised, but that's not really in my nature, so I hate to admit that the local takeaways do quite well out of my mid-week lack of planning / can't be bothered to cook attitude.

One day, while I was browsing the interweb, I discovered something called Hello Fresh. Basically,  it's a food delivery service with a difference. They send you a box full of food for either three meals or five meals for two people or a family of four each week. They do veggie boxes as well and I believe can cater for gluten allergies. They presume you don't have anything in your cupboards apart from olive oil, salt and pepper, so send you all the herbs and spices you need, and only send you the right amount of food for what you are making. So there is NO WASTAGE! Something that I am guilty of every week. All their produce is also great quality, with organic Biona tinned ingredients, and meat and fresh from excellent butchers and fishmongers.

What I really like about Hello Fresh is that with each box they give you three or five recipes (depending on what you have ordered) to make with the food they have provided. The recipes basically presume that you are a relative novice in the kitchen, with a step-by-step guide, with pictures. Perfect for people who want to learn how to cook from scratch, or like me, want to explore some new recipes and bump up their mid-week recipe repertoire. The recipes are really easy to follow, that even my husband has been making dinner at night, and it hasn't taken two hours to do, just within the allotted time they say it will take. Dinner in under an hour, from my husband is a rarity, so this is very welcome, sorry James. He's a great cook, it just takes ages to materialise as he is so methodical and a perfectionist. Knowing that the recipes are easy enough for both of us to make is also great for those moments when I can't be bothered to cook as James is more than happy to take charge. It's perfect as you just really don't have to think about it.

I've really enjoyed my deliveries and every recipe I've made with Hello Fresh! However, with my new health kick i'm trying to cut-out white potatoes, pasta and rice etc, opting for sweet potatoes and quinoa etc instead. Most of the Hello Fresh meals use rice, pasta or potatoes which is absolutely fine, but for me i've had to halt my delivery for a while. They do tell you how many calories is in each portion, which is great if you are not very good with portion control. Plus I do think that Hello Fresh is a healthy meal delivery system it's just not fitting in with my current food choices.

If you are in any way like me and not very good at a weekly shop, planning evening meals and reach for the takeaway menu more than you would like, then I would totally recommend trying Hello Fresh out.

P.S. I wasn't asked to write this post, and I didn't receive any free boxes, I just thought this was such a great concept that I had to share it with you all.
